Silverback Law wasn’t built from the traditional mould of law firm, it was created to challenge it.
The story of our founder, Jon Tullock, reflects this drive for something different: a vision of a law firm that is inclusive, flexible, and fiercely dedicated to its clients and team. Jon’s journey into law wasn’t straightforward, but each twist and turn laid the foundation for what would eventually become Silverback Law, a multimillion-pound firm known for its innovative approach.
A Pathway Carved Out of Passion and Perseverance
Growing up in Whitley Bay, Jon spent his early years far removed from law. His passions lay in football, where he played semi-professionally, and later, in a brief attempt at university life. Jon’s initial goal was to become a teacher, but a mix of youthful indulgence and long hours spent working in pubs and bars led him to drop out. It was a decision that disappointed his parents and filled him with self-doubt, yet it marked the beginning of a different journey.
In his early 20s, without any clear career path, Jon’s mother, who worked in a law firm, helped him get a job as a filing clerk. This seemingly modest role would become the starting point for Jon’s passion for law. Within six months, Jon was promoted to a junior paralegal position in debt recovery—a field he knew nothing about at the time. But it was here, amidst stacks of case files and client meetings, that Jon discovered a spark he hadn’t felt since his football days. He was fascinated by the complexities of debt litigation, and his determination and work ethic quickly set him apart.
Breaking Barriers and Building Expertise
As Jon’s career progressed, he rose through the ranks, managing teams, navigating the intricacies of law firm hierarchy, and learning about client relations and business management. But he couldn’t ignore the inequities he saw within traditional law firms. He noticed the glass ceiling, the gender disparities in pay, and the rigid “work-yourself-to-the-bone” culture that blocked many talented professionals from advancing. Although he thrived in his roles, Jon became increasingly disillusioned with the industry’s reluctance to embrace change.
After nearly a decade, Jon left his law firm and stepped away from law altogether, exploring new roles in business development. But the call of debt recovery and litigation was too strong, and he eventually found himself back in the industry. When two close friends suggested the idea of launching a debt recovery business, Jon’s entrepreneurial spirit took hold. He envisioned a law firm that could break away from the constraints he’d observed—one that valued work-life balance, embraced flexibility, and focused on inclusivity.

Taking the Leap, Founding Silverback Law
In 2014, Jon and Jo, a qualified corporate lawyer, took a leap of faith and launched Silverback Law. This was more than just a business venture; it was a vision they were passionate about. From the outset, they focused on building a law firm that prioritised its clients while challenging the traditional model. They wanted Silverback to be a place where people could have fulfilling careers without sacrificing family time, and they aimed to create an environment where every team member felt valued.
In 2017 and 2018, Silverback Law entered a new chapter with the appointment of two Directors, Julie Hind and Victoria Rofe, to its senior leadership team. Both brought a wealth of expertise in debt recovery and litigation, paired with sharp commercial acumen. Their arrival strengthened the firm’s strategic leadership and enhancing its ability to deliver innovative, client-focused solutions. Victoria and Julie’s contributions played a crucial role in shaping the firm’s growth, reinforcing its commitment to excellence, people-first culture, and sustainable success in a competitive legal landscape.
As the firm evolved, so did its leadership. Julie and Victoria soon joined Jon and Jo as Board Directors, ensuring a dynamic and strong, female lead, board.
Navigating Challenges and Achieving Milestones
In 2020 when COVID-19 hit, like so many businesses, Silverback Law faced an uncertain future. But through careful planning, hard work, and dedication from their loyal team, they weathered the storm and continued to grow. By 2023, Silverback Law reached a turnover milestone, expanded to over 30 staff members, and diversified its service offerings. They had built not just a law firm, but a supportive community that thrives on innovation and client-focused service.
Looking back on his 26 years in law, Jon has learned countless lessons. He believes in putting people first—whether it’s clients, colleagues, or family. His advice to those entering the field is simple: be pragmatic, understand your clients’ needs, work hard, and always be honest. But above all, he stresses the importance of creating a work-life balance that allows you to enjoy your career in law.

A Vision for the Future
Silverback Law has just celebrated 10 years in business, and Jon couldn’t be prouder of what they’ve achieved. His journey from football fields and university bars to founding a multimillion-pound law firm is a testament to his resilience, passion, and desire to make a difference. And as Silverback Law continues to grow, Jon’s commitment to his team and clients remains at the heart of everything they do.
